Broken Garage Door Spring? Here's What to Do (and Why It Happens)
By Jesse Clark, Owner · May 18, 2026
Garage door torsion springs are rated for roughly 10,000 cycles — about 7–10 years of normal use. In Arizona heat, that life can be shorter. When one lets go, you'll usually hear a loud bang from the garage, see a visible gap in the spring above the door, and find that the opener strains or the door won't lift.
The two-finger test
Pull the red emergency release and try to lift the door by hand. A balanced door with good springs should lift with two fingers and stay put halfway. If it slams down or feels like dead weight, your springs are done.
Why this is not a DIY job
Torsion springs store an enormous amount of energy. Released incorrectly, they cause serious injuries every year. We carry the right cones, bars, and replacement springs, and we always replace springs in pairs so the door stays balanced and the second spring doesn't fail a month later.
Hear a bang and now your door won't budge? We do same-day spring replacement across the East Valley — request service or call/text 602-500-1800.
